Chengdu – 成都
30 September 2015
Chengdu, the main city in Sichuan, is rich in cultural tradition.
The curled roofs at the Wenshu yuan (文殊院), or Manjushri Monastery, are quite different to the style in the North.
Du Fu (杜甫) was the pre-eminent poet of social conscience (Confucianism) during the Tang period. At the presumed site of his Thatched Cottage (草堂), someone had done calligraphy in water on the ground.
At the Daoist Bronze Goat Temple (青羊宫), people touch the two eponymous goats to benefit from their healing powers.
The Temple to the Marquis of Wu (武侯祠) is a memorial to the Three Kingdoms (三国) era (220-280), and the heroes of Wei, Shu and Wu, who made it far into Chinese literature and imagination.
