Chongqing – 重庆

Traditional Chongqing houses, about to be demolished Street in Ciqi kou, to be preserved
Chongqing is another city on water, sitting at the confluence of the Changjiang (Yangzi, 长江) and Jialing (嘉陵江) rivers, and also on hills.
Traditional Chongqing houses were on stilts and at multi-levels, clinging to the sides of the hills. Understated colours, brown and cream, are favoured in architecture.
We visited Ciqi kou (磁器口), a traditional Qing period (1644-1911) town with a pier, once known for its porcelain and a thriving trading centre. The town is now being preserved as of historical interest.
My friends have been the perfect hosts. They have taken me to all the sites and wined and dined me. We never imagined in 1984/85, that they would be driving me around in a private car. China has changed so much since then.
