Shanghai – 上海
14 September 2015
It’s been much cooler here – the sea air and further north.
My hotel is just north of the Bund (外滩), built by the British in 1846. Hardwood floors, high ceilings, once very grand. Now destination for Chinese middle class wedding parties – very relaxed.
Pudong (浦东) didn\’t exist when I was last here (1990). I went up to the highest indoor viewing platform in the world, at the World Financial Centre. Watched the Huangpu River, Suzhou Creek and Oriental Pearl TV Tower fade to dusk.
This city has huge aspirations, just like Beijing. I can\’t help but admire it. I wonder what the artist\’s point is about the ants.
